Our new shipment of bare root
fruit trees arrived January 20th. We're waiting for the snow
to melt before we can row them out in sawdust for display.
We should have them in place by the coming weekend.
We have a great selection this
year, including many varieties that are new to us. These
trees must be potted or permanently planted by around the
1st week in April (when they break dormancy), so shop soon
for the best selection!
Once the trees are potted,
their price goes up by 30%. By purchasing your trees bare
root, in addition to the savings, you have easy handling,
transporting and no huge planting holes required! Early
planting allows developing roots to take hold before spring
growth begins.

YOU CAN HAVE COLOR IN
WINTER!:
Hellebores (Lenten Rose), and
primroses can add a lot to an otherwise drab winter
landscape. Combine them with colorful foliage plants like
Heuchera and Euphorbia in an entryway planting or container.
(New stock coming this week)
Sarcoccoca (Himalayan
Sweetbox) is in full bloom right now, with evergreen
foliage, and intense, sweet fragrance! Great, hardy choice
for a shady or partly shaded entry where its heavenly
essence can be enjoyed.
We have three "flavors" of
Witch Hazel in full bloom right now. These well-structured
small tree/ shrubs don't miss a beat with their
delicate-looking yellow, orange or red blossoms persisting
through the rigors of winter!
Of Course there's more!
AMAZING BARK!:
The tree trunks shown in the
slideshow above, from left to right are: Acer tegmentosum
'White Tigress' (stripe-bark maple), Acer griseum (paper
bark maple), Betula jaquemontii (Himalayan white birch), and
Stewartia pseudocamellia (Japanese Stewartia).
All four varieties obviously
have incredibly beautiful bark that makes a bold statement
in the winter landscape. These trees are always among the
top choices of landscape designers and architects.
We have more trees with
interesting bark; Quaking Aspen, Coral-bark Japanese Maple,
Green-bark Japanese Maple, Franz Fontaine Hornbean, just to
name a few.
COOL CONIFERS!:
We have noticed an increase in
our specialty conifer sales over the past few seasons. I
think this may be due in part to customers seeking
alternatives to some of the broadleaf evergreen shrubs that
have suffered casualties in recent harsh winters. The
conifers may not have flashy flowers, but the foliage color,
textures and plant forms are very diverse. Plant sizes vary
from miniature (growing from less than 1 to 3" per season),
all the way up to the Giant Sequoia, and everything in
between. Weeping, crawling, columnar, fat, skinny, blue,
gold or green; you can build an entire, unique and enduring
landscape using just conifers.
We love them, and our
selection and quality is among the best in the area. Our
2012 stock is beginning to flow in, and is ever-changing
throughout the entire growing season.
